What it is
A long stay permission for people aged 50 years old on the day you applyOFFICIAL , built around one trade: you bring your own money and you do not work. work of any kind is off the table on this visaOFFICIAL , and that line is enforced.
Three visa types sit under the same idea, and they are not steps on one ladder.
- Non-O on retirement grounds, 90 days, single entryOFFICIAL . Gets you in, hands the long stay decision to Immigration once you are here.
- O-A, 1 year, multiple entryOFFICIAL . The year up front, in exchange for a heavier pack before you fly.
- O-X, 5 years per entry, up to 10 years in totalOFFICIAL . The long horizon, with the biggest money bar and a closed door for most of the world: 14 nationalities only: Japan, Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United StatesOFFICIAL
Three routes in
three working routes: short Non-O from abroad, O-A from abroad, or convert and extend inside ThailandPRACTICE Pick the route before you touch a document list, because the two sets of requirements, consulate and Immigration, are not the same and mixing them is how weeks get lost.
The lighter first step. 90 days, single entryOFFICIAL , filed at a post outside Thailand, with the consulate's own financial checklist rather than a Thai bank balance.
It is not a year of residence. It is entry on retirement grounds, and the clock starts the day you land. The plan has to include the extension before you board.
1 year, multiple entryOFFICIAL , filed from abroad, with a fuller pack: a medical certificate and a police clearance letterOFFICIAL , plus health cover.
Stricter on paper, calmer in practice, because you arrive with the year already granted instead of racing an Immigration deadline in a country you have just moved to.
Already here on another stamp. You convert to retirement grounds and then extend, through Immigration rather than a consulate. This route runs on a Thai bank account.
we do not open an in-country case until the Thai bank account is open or clearly openableOUR TAKE That is our own rule, not a published one, and it exists because every failed in-country case we have seen failed at the bank.
The money
From abroad, the bar reads 800,000 THB sitting in the accountOFFICIAL or 65,000 THB a month in verified incomeOFFICIAL , or the two combined to the same total.
Inside Thailand the shape changes. For the extension the money has to be Thai: 800,000 THB in a Thai bank, in place 2 months before you file and 3 months after approvalOFFICIAL . After that, after the first 3 months the balance may drop, but not below 400,000 THBOFFICIAL . The filing itself costs 1,900 THB for the extensionOFFICIAL .
The O-X route sits in its own bracket: 3,000,000 THB on fixed deposit, or 1,800,000 THB plus annual income of 1,200,000 THBOFFICIAL , and that money lives in a Thai bank, not yours at home.
Doing it inside Thailand
The in-country version is a sequence, not a submission. In recent cases it has run like this, though every office keeps its own rhythm.
- 01 Immigration first: current stamp, days left, and that office's own document list.
- 02 Bank: open the account or confirm the one you have, and check they will issue a bank letter.
- 03 Back to the bank for the letter, statement and updated passbook.
- 04 Collect the passport, then check the stamp dates before you leave the counter.
in recent in-country cases: bank visit, then back to the bank about 20 days later, then the passport about 5 days after thatPRACTICE
Insurance and background checks
Health cover is where the routes split. O-A asks for health cover of at least USD 100,000 or 3,000,000 THBOFFICIAL . O-X asks for 40,000 THB outpatient and 400,000 THB inpatient cover, held for the whole stayOFFICIAL .
Then the two background documents: a medical certificate and a police clearance letterOFFICIAL . Read the validity window on your post's page rather than assuming, because posts do not agree with each other here: the ministry page says three months, the London embassy says six. Order them too early and they expire before the file is complete.
Where cases fall apart
- The route was never chosen, so the client collected the wrong documents for six weeks.
- Someone expected a year and filed the ninety day Non-O.
- Too few days left on the current stamp to start an in-country conversion at all.
- No Thai bank account, and no realistic way to open one in time.
- Money in the Thai account, but not for long enough to satisfy the seasoning window.
- Insurance or background documents missing on a route that requires them.
- A plan to work, which the visa does not allow under any reading.
Immigration offices differ from each other on the extension, sometimes noticeably. We are collecting those differences office by office and will publish them here once they are sourced rather than reported.
Questions people actually ask
01 Do I have to show up at the consulate in person
In recent cases, no. Retirement filings from abroad have been running remotely through e-Visa or consular submission when the pack is complete and you have the right to file in that country. Posts differ, so confirm with yours before you plan a trip around it.
02 Can I get the one year visa straight away
Only on the O-A route from abroad, and only with the fuller pack: money, insurance, and the two background documents. The short Non-O gets you in the door, then the year comes from Immigration once you are here.
03 Can I work on a retirement visa
No. The MFA wording is blunt: employment of any kind is strictly prohibited. Remote income into a foreign account is a different conversation and a different visa, and it is worth having that conversation before you file.
04 Do I need a Thai bank account
For the in-country route, effectively yes: the financial evidence comes from a Thai bank as a letter, a statement and an updated passbook. For the routes from abroad, your own bank at home usually carries the file.
